For the bagels:

  • 1 ½ cups warm water

  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast

  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

  • 3 ½ cups bread flour

  • 2 teaspoons salt

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

For the creamed honey spread:

  • 4 tablespoons Artisan Bees Honey Company's creamed honey (choose your favorite flavor)

  • Optional toppings: sliced fresh fruit, chopped nuts, or a sprinkle of cinnamon

Baking Instructions:

1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, honey, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy. This indicates that the yeast is activated.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine bread flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.

3. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. Shape the dough into a ball.

4. Grease a large bowl with vegetable oil. Place the dough in the bowl, turning it to coat it with oil. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

5. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

6. Punch down the risen dough to deflate it. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and use your thumb to make a hole in the center of each ball. Gently stretch the hole to form a bagel shape.

7. Place the shaped bagels onto the prepared baking sheet. Let them rest for about 10 minutes to puff up slightly.

8. In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Carefully slide 2-3 bagels into the boiling water at a time. Allow them to cook for about 1-2 minutes, flipping them halfway through. Remove the boiled bagels with a slotted spoon and place them back onto the baking sheet.

9. Once all the bagels have been boiled, transfer the baking sheet to the preheated oven. Bake for about 20-25 minutes or until the bagels turn golden brown.

10. Let the bagels cool slightly. Then, slice the cooled bagels in half horizontally. Spread a generous amount of our creamed honey on each bagel half. Optionally, top with sliced fresh fruit, chopped nuts, or a sprinkle of cinnamon.
